For many small business owners, it is much too expensive to pay for credit card services that allow us to offer a guest checkout option where customers can simply enter their info without creating an account in order to buy something online.

I've had a business account with PayPal for 15 years and they've always served me well, especially since I've established myself as an honest and fair business owner. However, some have an aversion to creating any kind of an account -- some to the point of refusing to shop at a store that requires it, even if it is just a PayPal account.

So I've tried using other payment processing services just to have multiple payment options, but they all want to hold my funds for whatever period of time and that simply isn't right. Those funds are NOT theirs to be holding, nor do they have any reason whatsoever to be holding them -- nobody has ever filed a claim and I've already been verified.

Nope, "just because it's in our terms that you agreed to by using our service" is never a good enough excuse, especially when they shouldn't legally be allowed to do so unless they have a valid (and fully verifiable) reason. Can your bank pull that kind of stunt on you? Absolutely not! It's against the law.

So, they're basically putting my business at risk "just because" they can due to some term that shouldn't even be legal. Well, I simply don't use those other services anymore since I don't agree to their terms. PayPal is the only service that has never held my funds for any reason.

While PayPal does have an Express Checkout service that can be used as a guest checkout option, not all sites offer it. However, I just recently found out that if the business owner has a business or premier PayPal account (like me), the standard PayPal service can also be used as a guest checkout option.

Unfortunately, even with this guest checkout feature, most shopping carts and checkout pages don't make it clear upfront that the option is available -- it just shows the PayPal logo. So, many shoppers will simply abandoned a cart before they even get to the page that does show the option.

For example, take my shop powered by Storenvy. I have no control over what is displayed on the shopping cart or checkout pages. As you can see below, it appears as though a PayPal account is required when it isn't. It's not until the fourth step in the checkout process that the option is shown.

The first step, viewing the shopping cart, displays a big PayPal logo right in the middle:

The second step is where you enter your shipping information and the page doesn't display anything about payment options, so I didn't include a screenshot for it. However, the third step is where you select the payment method. This step only exists because Storenvy also offers Stripe, but I've tried them and closed that account after the very first transaction where they triple charged my customer.

So, since I only use PayPal to process payments, it is the only option displayed -- without any details about whether or not an account is required. Storenvy really should do away with this step if a shop is only offering one payment option as it's completely unnecessary -- not to mention all the more misleading:

It's not until the fourth step that a barely noticeable option appears at the very bottom. Notice how the option to login to PayPal is in a very noticeable blue while the option to checkout directly with just your credit/debit card is in a faded, much less noticeable gray:

So, why don't they make it clearer upfront? Who knows? I'm just glad that my customers have a way to securely checkout as a guest since my shop does offer PayPal Express. I just have to take extra steps to make customers aware that a PayPal account is not required to purchase from me -- like this blog post that I've linked to from my shop's FAQ page as well as beneath the PayPal Verified logo that appears on all of my shop's pages.
Let's Get Them Organized!Just say NO to junky drawers! Noooo, not those kind of junky drawers! LOL I'm talking about how every drawer in your house looks like what we call a "junk drawer." Since I can remember, I've always been an organizer. Whenever the family needs something organized or packed well, they always call on me to take on the task because I can just visualize a way to get the most out of a space.

So, naturally, I really hate having messy drawers that you have to dig through a bunch of junk to find what you're looking for; thereby making it all that much messier. It was sometime in high school, when digging through my bathroom drawers for makeup products, that I came up with the idea to use various containers inside drawers to keep things neat and orderly. No more rummaging around because everything's right there at your fingertips.

Since I'm also a "green" person who wants to keep the whole world clean, I thought I'd share the following to give you some ideas about how to better organize your drawers that will work for any drawer in any room -- and without spending a lot of money, if any. Many things you need for these projects can be found cheaply at the dollar store.

You may even find some things around the house that you could use -- bowls, plates, cookie tins, square baking pans, etc. Cardboard boxes are also good to use, but only if they're sturdy and will last a good long while -- like shoe boxes with the depth cut to fit a drawer. Personally, other than buying plastic drawer organizers, I've repurposed old checkbook boxes to organize my office supplies in both cabinets and drawers. If you prefer, any cardboard box can easily be decorated with things like fabric or adhesive drawer liners.

My first idea involves using metal mesh baskets and thin metal bowls with Velcro, which can be found cheaply at your local dollar store or even Wal-Mart, if you don't already have some lying around the house. The Velcro is for keeping things from moving around when opening and closing the drawer. Of course, this will also work with plastic containers, bowls, and the like, as long as the bottom rests flat on the surface so the Velcro makes contact.

What You Will Need:

Best Method:

Before you do anything, arrange the containers in the drawer until you've determined that you've made the most out of the space. It's a good idea to keep the larger containers towards the back and the smaller ones at front so you can easily grab what you need. Considering that you'll be using Velcro, you'll also need to make sure you...

Attach the velcro to the bottom of the containers, keeping both sides of the velcro together, but don't remove the tape from the adhesive until you're ready to start placing them in the drawer:

Starting with the containers that go in the back, remove the tape from the adhesive and carefully place the containers in the spots you previously determined. Once a container is in place, press down firmly on the spots where the velcro is attached to make sure the adhesive has made full contact with the drawer:

When you're done, you'll be so proud of yourself and happy to finally have a neat and organized drawer!

So, I thought I'd offer a tip to help ensure you're getting the best deals out there while also reducing the probability of buyer remorse and the dreaded return process.

One trend that has become popular among retailers is offering "FREE" shipping, but have you ever asked yourself, "Is it really free?" Being one who's been selling online for six years now, I can honestly answer this question by simply saying that it's NEVER free because somebody has to pay for it. It's just a matter of who is actually paying for it.

Unfortunately, not all shoppers are aware that it's often just a gimmick that is abused to lure you in. I believe part of the reason for that lack of awareness is because you can't always see the total cost of a product when browsing the countless offerings, whether via a search engine, a marketplace venue like Amazon, Etsy or eCrater, or a retail store's site. Not even all price comparison sites provide that information or, if they do, they're not including every possible product offering available because they only show those offerings from paying member stores.

More often than not, you have to actually go through the checkout process to see just how much you're required to pay for a product (unit price, shipping/handling, and sales tax). So, while one site might offer free shipping, it could be that someone else who isn't offering free shipping may have the better deal -- and that better deal might be on a completely different site than is shown.

Let's take sites like Overstock and Wayfair as examples. They both offer either low-cost or free shipping, but do they actually have the better deal? I've shopped (or browsed) both sites and have found that they usually don't. Not once have I bought anything from either site because there has always been someone offering a better deal elsewhere despite adding a shipping/handling charge to the final cost.

So, how can you tell if a site is actually offering free shipping? You simply need to do your research, comparing prices at various sites, and do NOT rely on price comparison sites alone. You need to search the world wide web. If a site is truly providing free shipping, then the item price won't be inflated above what others are offering it for -- meaning they're actually charging you for shipping, but are hiding it in the item price.

Rarely do I offer free shipping in my own store simply because I'm not one to use deceptive practices to lure customers in. I will only offer it when I have chosen to eat the cost of shipping, meaning the item price is the actual value of the product (or less) and there is no additional charge for shipping. That also means that a customer who lives closer to me is not paying the cost to ship an item to a customer who lives farther away.

For example, I once had a valuable Josef Originals doll up for sale with free shipping. The value of the doll itself was $130-150 and I only found one other being offered on another site at $129.99 plus shipping. So, I offered mine at $129.95 with free shipping. Not only did I offer it at the low-end of its market value, but I didn't charge extra for shipping. So, in that case, the shipping truly was free to the customer who bought it because I chose to eat the cost of shipping by paying for it out of the item price.

However, in the case of the stained glass items I sell, they are large, heavy items that cost quite a bit to ship and the cost varies greatly from one shipping zone to the next. If I were to offer free shipping on those items, my profit margin would vary greatly depending on how far I had to ship an item, resulting in deep cuts in profit when shipping to more distant locations (Shipping Zone 8 or 9).

Unless, of course, I inflated the price to cover the cost to ship that item to the farthest point from me -- but, if I did that, then the shipping wouldn't actually be free, now would it? Not only that, but customers located closer to me would be overpaying for shipping. So, nope, I don't offer free shipping on those items. Everyone pays the same item price and the appropriate shipping cost based on their own location.

Another thing to consider is that free shipping isn't always the best option. The reason being that "free" shipping usually means the cheapest, slowest shipping method. The holiday shopping season is the busiest shipping time of the year, which means longer delivery times -- sometimes significantly longer. Especially if Mother Nature decides to wreak havoc on shipping routes. So, if you're opting for free shipping, you should allow at LEAST two weeks for your package to arrive.

Also, a word of advice to those last minute shoppers (you know who you are *wink*), DO NOT wait until the last minute! LOL A courier will NOT deliver your package the next day even on their best day -- unless you pay out the wazoo for that service (and even then there's no guarantee). During the holiday shopping season, you'd be lucky to get your package in 3-5 days, so please do not bite a store owner's head off for not being able to pull off the impossible. LOL

Hopefully the above will give you a better understanding of how it REALLY works in the world of online shopping. Don't let yourself be so quickly drawn in by the offer of low-cost or free shipping because it may not actually be the best deal. Like I said, search the world wide web and make your own comparisons, even if it means "pretending" to checkout just to see what the shipping will cost (just make sure you don't click that final payment button).

Happy Shopping!! =)
